Killeen Police Shooting: Officer and Gunman Killed (PHOTO and VIDEO)

A Killeen police shooting left one police and a suspect dead after a man armed with a military-style assault weapon opened fire at Central Texas apartment over the weekend.

The shooting took place after tactical officers went to the complex when the suspect was reported threatening people in the pool with a gun. According to police statement, officers attempted to speak to the man, who was inside the apartment.

The man came to the door with hands raised, but as officers tried to take him into custody he backed deeper the apartment and re-emerged with an AK47 and began shooting at officers. One officer was killed and the other remained wounded.

“All of a sudden I hear a boom. It sounded like a gunshot. I heard more, several, like someone was spraying [gunfire] and I come outside and the cops were yelling at the gentleman that lived over there put it down, put it down, come out and then it went from there,” recalled witness Heather Laham to KXXV-TV.

According to police spokeswoman Carroll Smith, the officer who died was a great officer. “He was a friend, he was good son, a good husband and a good father, a good brother, a great guy and he’s going to be missed deeply.”

The suspect was killed during the exchanged fire with the police officers.

The names of the two officers and the suspect were not revealed by the police department. Neighbors claimed the dead suspect was a former military veteran.
