A North Korean ship was caught smuggling “missile components” hidden in sugar containers, in Panama. The ship was going from Cuba to North Korea.

According to the president of Panama Ricardo Martinelli, the security board stopped the Chong Chon Gan initially suspecting it was smuggling drugs.

The President of Panama posted this picture saying authorities seized a North Korean ship traveling from Cuba.

They started to inspect the ship with a sophisticated detection equipment to prevent drugs shipments passing through the canal when they uncovered “what appeared to be missile components.”

“When we started to unload the shipment of sugar, we located containers that we believe to be sophisticated missile equipment, and that is not allowed,” president said.

This isn’t the first time that Pyongyang has been caught violating UN sanctions against its arms sales.

According to Martinelli, during the operation the estimated 35-man crew rioted and the captain tried to kill himself.

"The world needs to sit up and take note: you cannot go around shipping undeclared weapons of war through the Panama Canal," he told Radio Panama listeners.

UN sanctions bar the transport of all weapons to or from North Korea apart for small arms.
