Three campgrounds in California have been evacuated and closed down after the discovery of plague-infected squirrel.

According to Los Angeles officials, the visitors were ordered to leave the Angeles National Forest as precaution while preventive measures are taken to control the flea population.

The squirrel was trapped there on July 16 and tested positive for the infection on Tuesday.

Plague can be transmitted to humans through flea bites and can be fatal if untreated. The symptoms include rapid onset of fever and chills and enlarged lymph glands near the bite.

The disease is caused by Yersinia pestis, the one that killed more than half the European population in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report an average of seven human cases per year in the U.S.
