Tropical Storm Chantal has degenerated Wednesday into a tropical wave in the Caribbean, about 260 miles south of Cuba.

Yet heavy rains from the weakened storm are expected in South and Central Florida. According to Stephen Konarik of the National Weather Service it will not be “a widespread heavy rain event.”

The wave is projected to move over or near the Florida peninsula by Friday, where heavy wind shear is expected to keep it from reforming as a storm.

A photo provided by NASA’s TRMM and Terra satellites shows the storm’s cloud cover and rainfall as it entered the eastern Caribbean Sea.

Chantal was formed on July 7 and it has continued to race westward at up to 29 mph.

On July 10 at 1:40 p.m. EDT the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA’s Terra satellite shows most of the clouds and showers were east of the center of circulation.

Chantal has reportedly caused the death of a 26-year-old Dominican firefighter, in the community of Maimon on Wednesday. Juan Ramon Rodriguez was trying to clear a storm drain when rushing waters carried him away.

Nearly 6,500 people had been evacuated by Dominican authorities.

People in Jamaica, eastern Cuba and the Bahamas were urged to monitor wave’s progress.
